Goals:
    1. To acquaint you with some of the masterpieces of literature of the nonwestern world
    2. To introduce you to new paradigms in human thought
    3. To develop your skills in analytical reading
Text: The Norton Anthology of World Massterpieces, expanded edition in one volume 
Grades:
    1. Consult the assignment sheet for daily reading assignments; do not fall behind.
    2. You will have three major exams averaged equally. To pass the exams you must read the assigned literature and take notes in class. Cliff's Notes and similar aids are relatively useless in preparing for the exams.
    3. You will keep a literary journal and will have some web-based research assignments. The grades for the research assignments and the journal will, together, be 10% of your final grade.
Attendance:
    1.  Do not miss class. For each absence after the first one your grade will drop by fifteen percent. If you miss more than one class, make an appointment to see me. Being late or leaving early twice will count as one absence.
    2.  If you leave the room during an exam, you cannot return and resume work on the exam.
    3.  If you bring a phone to class, turn it off.
Work load:
It is generally recommended for university work that a student should spend an average of two hours in out-of-class preparation for each one hour of class meeting in order to earn a C. Using this guideline, you ought to plan on working outside class an average of six hours per week for English 2331 (or longer if you hope to earn an A or a B).
